This reports on an smiley faces and emoticon statistics update which highlights the continued amazing growth in the use of emoticons. I have reported previously about the amazing growth in emoticon statistics. What this report shows is the flattening out of search growth of this phenomenon.

It is only 68 days ago that I reported the number of searches for each of the following search terms. Today I have added the current vales for comparison together with the growth rates for each of the keywords.

What a difference 68 days makes! Every statistic is down by 3.4 %. Wow! Does this mean that the phenomenon has peaked? Is it in decline? We will need to wait and see.

There is still a huge number of searches despite the small decline. What are you guys out there doing with the smileys?

This means that there are at around 900 thousand searches every day. By the time you add in all the other similar searches there is almost certainly over 1 million searches every day for smileys and emoticons! Every single day! thats around 365 million searches every year. Just for those lovable little characters. that’s a lot of searches.

Before you question these statistics, I must say that they are by their nature approximate. But what is interesting this time is the “across the board” decline in the growth rate. My figures are very much on a like for like basis and therefore while the absolute numbers might be approximate, the growth figures should be less so, because I have used the same basic source for the figures.

The figures for the number of pages that Google has identified as satisfying the search for each of the keywords is shown in the table below.

Interestingly three of the four keywords is showing decline in the number of pages on the internet. I cannot answer why one page statistics have gone up so dramatically, but all the others are down between 7 and 35 percent. This is amazing! The overall total of these 4 keywords has gone down by 3%.

I would caution on the absolute numbers for these statistics. Many pages will be counted more than once in the above table, but nonetheless the underlying decline over 68 days is quite remarkable.

In summary, the smiley or emoticon phenomenon may well have peaked as this emoticon statistics update clearly shows. The smiley industry is still huge. the next set of statistics will be very interesting.

Smileys and other emoticons, or “emotion icons” are considered flippant by some people, but in fact they perform a very useful and necessary service in the area of e-mail and text communication. Another point to consider is this; will the recipient of your e-mail understand the use of the Smiley? Older professionals, in particular, may not have the experience of using or receiving emoticons. So the question is not so much if they will approve, but if they will actually understand the intended meaning of including emoticons in your message. Unless an individual has sent you an e-mail containing a smiley, it is impossible to say for certain if they are familiar with, or approve of, these helpful little symbols.

To summarize, Smileys should only be used in the most informal of business correspondence, or if you have a close relationship with the recipient. You should never use a smiley or other emoticon in a formal business memo, proposal, letter or communication.
